Shortly after releasing the world’s first 18-400mm zoom lens, Tamron has another announcement. They are launching a new high-speed zoom lens: SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2. It’s intended for full frame cameras, and it offers some improvements over their previous 24-70mm model. It features faster and highly accurate autofocus, and Tamron emphasizes that this lens has the highest vibration compensation performance of any lens in its class. It’s versatile and intended for a wide range of shooting styles, and shooting in different lighting and weather conditions.

The most prominent feature of this lens is certainly the image stabilization. This lens features 5 stops of image stabilization, for putting the risk of camera shake at a minimum. Paired with the faster and more accurate AF system, photographers will be able to shoot sharp images even handheld and in low light conditions.

The lens is made from high-quality glass materials and consists of 17 elements in 12 groups. They are designed to minimize axial chromatic aberrations, transverse chromatic aberrations, spherical aberrations, and distortion.

The new Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens contains Tamron’s eBAND protective multi-coatings. They reduce reflections, ghosting, and flare, improving the image quality even further and allowing you to achieve optimal results even with backlit subjects. The front element contains water- and oil-repellant Fluoride Coating which makes it easier to remove fingerprints, smudges, and dirt. The lens is also moisture-resistant, allowing you to shoot in different weather conditions.

Let’s take a look at the full specs:

Focal Length [mm] 24-70
Maximum Aperture F/2.8
Minimum Object Distance [m] 0,38
Maximum Magnification Ratio 1:5
Filter Size [mm] 82
Weight [g] 905g Canon / 900g Nikon

Groups-Elements 12 – 17
Angle of view 84°04′-34°21′
Diaphragm Blades 9
Minimum Aperture F/22

Although the specs and images are out, there’s still no word on the lens’ price. However, Tamron shares the dates of launch: Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 will be available for Nikon mount from August 2 and for Canon mount on September 2, 2017. So if you’re into getting this lens to follow you through your photographic adventures – keep these dates in mind, and stay tuned for more information.

Update: the price of the lens is now announced and it’s $1,199. You can preorder yours for Nikon F and Canon EF mount.

I’m curious how it will stack up with the competition. Canon supposedly is also working on a new 24-70 2.8 (with IS this time) and Sigma’s 24-70mm f2.8 dg os hsm has just started selling AFAIK. Let’s hope at least one of the three nails it.

The best thing about this lens is that they made it lighter for Nikon users!

I wonder if when this comes out if Canon will drop the price on theirs to compete a little ?
